

	[12/12] Looking up to Jesus of Christmas and wishing to imitate him (Matt 1:18-25. Eph 2:13-16) - Mission Church

It is so good for me to come back here again today to meet my dear friends from many different foreign countries and to worship God together with you. I have come here 16th times during the past 11 years since 2010. Today I have come here 17th time and I am going to deliver a message entitled as “Looking up to Jesus of Christmas and wishing to imitate him.” Pastor Gloria (Young Ae) Kim wanted me to deliver a message about “Jesus of Christmas.”

오늘 여기 다시 와서 여러 나라들에서 오신 사랑하는 친구들을 만나게 되어서 그리고 여러분들과 함께 하나님께 예배 드리게 되어서 아주 좋습니다. 제가 2010년부터 지난11년 동안 여기 16번 왔습니다. 오늘은 17번째로 여기 와서 “성탄의 예수님을 바라보고 닮기를 소원하며” 라는 제목으로 말씀을 전하려고 합니다. 김영애 선교사님이 “성탄의 예수님”에 대한 설교를 하면 좋겠다는 말을 했습니다.

Now let us try to look up to Jesus of Christmas and try to imitate him. The apostle John described Jesus as the “Word” in chapter one of the Gospel of John as the following. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made”(John 1:1-3). The apostle John described Jesus as the “Word” and described that the Word was with God and the Word was God.

그러면 이제부터 성탄의 예수님을 바라보도록 하고 주님을 닮도록 하십시다. 사도 요한은 요한복음 1장에서 예수님을 “말씀” 이라고 다음과 같이 서술했습니다. “태초에 만물이 그로 말미암아 지은 바 되었으니 지은 것이 하나도 그가 없이는 된 것이 없느니라”(요 1:1-3). 사도 요한은 예수님을 “말씀” 이라고 서술했고 말씀이 하나님과 함께 계셨다고 서술했고 그리고 말씀이 곧 하나님이시라고 서술했습니다.

When Jesus the Son of God and God came to the world on Christmas day he did not come as an angel but as a man and lived with all kinds of men. “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth”(John 1:14). Jesus the Son of God and God became a man and even became a sinful man. “God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man,”(Rom 8:3,4).

성자이시고 하나님이신 예수님께서 성탄의 날 세상에 오셨을 때 천사로 오시지 않았고 사람으로 오셨고 모든 사람들과 함께 사시게 되었습니다. “말씀이 육신이 되어 우리 가운데 거하시매 우리가 그 영광을 보니 아버지의 독생자의 영광이요 은혜와 진리가 충만하더라”(요 1:14). 성자 예수님께서 육신을 가진 사람이 되시고 “죄 있는 육신의 모양”을 지니시게 까지 되셨다고 지적했습니다. “곧 죄를 인하여 자기 아들을 죄 있는 육신의 모양으로 보내어 육신에 죄를 정하사 육신을 좇지 않고 그 영을 좇아 행하는 우리에게 율법의 요구를 이루어지게 하려 하심이니라”(롬 8:3,4).

Such an amazing and surprising thing could not be found in the universe. When we meditate such an amazing and surprising thing we would be surprised and would fall down backward. There could happen revolution in our thinking and evaluation. We could escape from the Confucian traditions which stick to the goodness of selfish existence and thinking.

이처럼 놀라운 일은 이 우주에 없을 것입니다. 이 놀라운 사실을 깊이 생각하며 바라볼 때 우리들은 너무너무 놀라서 쓸어지게 될 것입니다. 우리들의 사고와 가치관에 혁명이 일어날 것입니다. 자기의 존재와 자기의 기질을 선하다고 고집하는 유교적인 전통에서 벗어나게도 될 것입니다.

When Jesus the Son of God came to the world on Christmas day he did not come as an adult man but as a child. “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace”(Is. 9:6). “On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh”(Mt. 2:11).

성자 예수님께서 성탄의 날 세상에 오셨을 때 어른으로 오시지 않았고 아기로 오셨다고 했습니다. “이는 한 아기가 우리에게 났고 한 아들을 우리에게 주신 바 되었는데 그 어깨에는 정사를 메었고 그 이름은 기묘자라, 모사라, 전능하신 하나님이라, 영존하시는 아버지라, 평강의 왕이라 할것임이라”(사 9:6). “집에 들어가 아기와 그 모친 마리아의 함께 있는 것을 보고 엎드려 아기께 경배하고 보배합을 열어 황금과 유향과 몰약을 예물로 드리니라”(마 2:11).

A child is an intimate and loving existence towards all kinds of people. Even the wicked man would not dislike and hate the child. The reason why Jesus the Son of God came to the world not as an angel or an adult man but as a child was that he wanted to come as a weak, intimate and loving existence to all kinds of sinners. It was really grateful and gracious thing.

아기는 모든 사람에게 친근하고 사랑스러운 약한 존재입니다. 악한 사람이라도 아기를 싫어하고 무서워하는 사람은 거의 없을 것입니다. 성자 예수님께서 세상에 오셨을 때 천사나 어른의 모습으로 오시지 않고 한 아기로 오신 이유는 범죄한 우리 인간들에게 무서운 존재가 아닌 약하고 친근하고 사랑스러운 존재로 오시기를 원하셨기 때문이라고 생각합니다. 얼마나 고맙고 황송한 일인지 모릅니다.

When Jesus the Son of God came to the world on Christmas day he did not come as a rich man but as a poor child. Jesus became poverty. Jesus the Son of God lived his whole human life as a poor man and died as a poor naked man

성자 예수님께서 성탄의 날 우리 인류의 역사 속으로 들어오셨을 때 부자의 모습으로 오시지 않았고 가난한 아기의 모습으로 오셨습니다. 아니 가난이 되셨습니다. 성자 예수님께서는 사람이 되시어서 일생을 가난하게 사시다가 가난한 벌거벗은 모습으로 죽으셨습니다.

The apostle Paul pointed out that Jesus the Son of God was originally rich but became poor for our sake as the following. “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.”(2 Cor. 8:9). Jesus the Son of God proclaimed to his followers that the first blessing was becoming poor as the following, "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God”(Lk. 6:20). The spirit of Christmas is carrying poorness and extending the hands of love and help towards all kinds of the poor peoples.

사도 바울은 성자 예수님께서 본래부터 부요하신 분으로 존재하셨지만 우리들을 위해서 가난하게 되셨다고 지적했습니다. “우리 주 예수 그리스도의 은혜를 너희가 알거니와 부요하신 자로서 너희를 위하여 가난하게 되심은 그의 가난함을 인하여 너희로 부요케 하려 하심이니라”(고후 8:9). 결국 성자 예수님께서는 자기를 따르는 자들에게 첫째 복이 가난한 자가 되는 것이라고 선포하셨습니다. “가난한 자는 복이 있나니 하나님의 나라가 너희 것임이요”(눅 6:20). 성탄의 정신은 가난의 모습을 지니고 가난한 자들에게 사랑과 위로와 도움의 손길을 펴는 것이라고 생각합니다.

When Jesus the Son of God came to the world on Christmas day he also came as a man of suffering. Right after the birth Jesus suffered of taking refuge to Egypt. Jesus the Son of God lived his whole life the life of suffering and died the death of extreme suffering.

성자 예수님께서 성탄의 날 세상에 오셨을 때 또한 고난의 사람으로 오셨습니다. 성자 예수님께서는 태어나시자 마자 애굽으로 피난을 가야 하는 고난에 처하시게 되셨습니다. 성자 예수님께서는 평생을 고난의 삶을 하시다가 극심한 고난의 죽음을 죽으셨습니다.

When we look up to Jesus of Christmas we also come to see that Jesus did not come as a peaceful man but as a man of sorrows and pains. In facts the life of Jesus the Son of God was full of sorrows and pains.

우리들이 성탄의 예수님을 바라볼 때 예수님께서는 평화로운 사람으로 오시지 않고 슬픔과 아픔의 사람으로 오신 것을 알게 됩니다. 사실 성자 예수님의 삶은 슬픔과 아픔으로 충만한 삶이었습니다.

The life of poverty, suffering, sorrow and pain which Jesus the Son of God carried in his body and life was precious and valuable life which helps us sinners greatly. Isaiah 53:4,5 described as the following. “Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.”(Is. 53:4,5). When Jesus the Son of God was crucified on the cross Jesus experienced extreme poverty, suffering, sorrow and pain.

성자 예수님께서 몸과 삶에 지니신 가난과 고난과 슬픔과 아픔의 삶은 우리 죄인들을 크게 도우시는 귀중하고 보배로운 삶이었습니다. 이사야 53장 4절과 5절은 성자 예수님께서 당하실 고난과 슬픔을 이렇게 기술했습니다. “그는 실로 우리의 질고를 지고 우리의 슬픔을 당하였거늘 그가 징계를 받음으로 우리가 평화를 누리고 그가 채찍에 맞음으로 우리가 나음을 입었도다”(사53:4,5). 성자 예수님께서는 십자가에 달려 죽으실 때 극심한 가난과 고난과 슬픔과 아픔을 당하셨습니다.

There were faithful and precious servants of Jesus who tried to imitate and resemble Jesus the Son of God. The faithful and precious servants of Jesus wanted to live the life imitating and resembling the life of Jesus and wanted to die the death imitating and resembling the death of Jesus Christ.

성자 예수님을 본받고 닮기를 소원하는 충성되고 귀중한 예수님의 제자들이 있었습니다. 예수님의 충성되고 귀중한 제자들은 예수님의 삶을 본받고 닮는 삶을 살기를 소원했고 예수님의 죽음을 본받고 닮는 죽음을 죽기를 소원했습니다.

We are going to look at three faithful servants of Jesus who tried to imitate and resemble Jesus the Son of God. We are going to look at the apostle Paul. St. Francis and the Rev. Son Yang Won briefly.

우리는 하나님의 아들 성자 예수님을 본받고 닮기를 소원했던 충성되고 귀중한 세 사람을 살펴보려고 합니다. 사도 바울과 성 프랜시스와 손양원 목사님을 간단하게 살펴보려고 합니다.

The apostle Paul was originally blasphemer, persecutor and violent man. However, after he met Jesus the Son of God and after he repented extremely his sins, his life was completely changed, He wanted to resemble Jesus. His life has changed as a life full of poverty, suffering, sorrow and pain.

사도 바울은 본래 훼방자요 핍박자요 포행자였습니다. 그러나 성자 예수님을 만나서 처절하게 자기의 죄를 회개한 다음에는 그의 삶이 완전하게 변화되었습니다. 그는 예수님을 닮기를 소원하게 되었고 그의 삶은 가난과 고난과 슬픔과 아픔으로 가득하게 되었습니다.

The apostle Paul described his changed life as the following. “I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again. Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my own countrymen, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false brothers. I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked”(2 Cor. 11:23-27). “That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Cor. 12:10).

사도 바울은 자기의 변화된 삶을 다음과 같이 기록했습니다. “내가 수고를 넘치도록 하고 옥에 갇히기도 더 많이 하고 매도 수없이 맞고 여러 번 죽을 뻔 하였으니 유대인들에게 사십에 하나 감한 매를 다섯번 맞았으며 세번 태장으로 맞고 한번 돌로 맞고 세번 파선하는데 일 주야를 깊음에서 지냈으며 여러 번 여행에 강의 위험과 강도의 위험과 동족의 위험과 이방인의 위험과 시내의 위험과 광야의 위험과 바다의 위험과 거짓 형제 중의 위험을 당하고 또 수고하며 애쓰고 여러 번 자지 못하고 주리며 목마르고 여러 번 굶고 춥고 헐벗었노라"(고후 11:23-27). “그러므로 내가 그리스도를 위하여 약한 것들과 능욕과 궁핍과 핍박과 곤란을 기뻐하노니 이는 내가 약할 그때에 곧 강함이니라”(고후 12:10).

St. Francis lived the life full of poverty, suffering, sorrow and pain. St. Francis really wanted to imitate and resemble Jesus the Son of God. Francis was born as a son of rich dry goods dealer in Feb. of 1182. St. Francis refused to receive any inheritances from his father and lived his life poorly. It was because he wanted really to live poor life after Jesus the Son of God. St. Francis said such meaningful sayings as the following. “Poverty is my dear wife, Suffering is my teacher, Death is my sister.”

성 프랜시스는 가난과 고난과 슬픔과 아픔으로 충만한 삶을 살았습니다. 성 프랜시스는 정말로 성자 예수님을 본받고 닮기를 소원했습니다. 프랜시스는 1182년 2월 이태리 앗씨시의 부유한 포목상의 아들로 태어났는데 그는 아버지로부터의 상속권도 재산도 아무 것도 받지 않고 평생 가난하게 살았습니다. 성자 예수님을 따라서 가난한 삶을 살기를 간절히 소원했기 때문이었습니다. 성 프랜시스는 다음과 같은 의미 있는 말씀을 했습니다. “가난은 나의 애처이고 고난은 나의 스승이고 죽음은 나의 자매입니다.”

Two years before his death St. Francis went up to the mountain Laverna and prayed deeply as the following. “O my dear Lord Jesus Christ, Who are you my Lord? Who am I like a little insect? Allow me to carry two graces. One is to carry sorrow and pain in my body and soul which you carried when you died on the Cross. Second is to carry extreme love to overcome the extreme sorrow and pain. At the very moment a very severe suffering of fire happened in his bodies and he became faint dead. Red bloods were bleeding from his bodies. There were sever pains. Such kinds of severe pains and suffering continues for two years until he died. St. Francis, however, was grateful and enjoyed the blessings of God. St. Francis died in the year of 1226(Oct. 3) when he was 45 years old and returned to heavenly home. One of the last words which St. Francis said was as the following. “O my dear sister, death.”

그가 죽기 2년 전 라베르나 산에 들어가서 깊은 기도에 빠졌습니다. “사랑하는 나의 주님 예수 그리스도시여, 도대체 당신은 누구이시며 작은 벌레 같은 저는 무엇입니까? 오, 내 주 예수 그리스도시여, 제가 죽기 전에 두가지 은총을 허락해 주소서. 한 가지는 당신께서 수난에서 당하셨던 그 고통을 제 영혼과 육체도 체험할 수 있도록 허락해 주시옵소서. 또 한가지는 그 어떤 고통도 감내할 수 있는 극치의 사랑을 저에게 넘치게 주시옵소서.” 바로 그때였습니다. 프랜시스의 몸에는 마치 불덩어리를 댄 것 같은 고통이 일어나 그는 그만 까무러쳐 버리고 말았습니다. 그의 몸에서는 붉은 피가 흘려 내리고 있었습니다. 심한 통증이 있었습니다. 그와 같은 극심한 아픔과 고통은 그가 죽기까지 2년 동안 계속되었습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 성 프랜시스는 하나님의 축복에 감사하며 영혼의 기쁨을 누리고 있었습니다. 성 프랜시스는 1226년 10월 3일 45세를 일기로 세상을 떠나 하늘 집으로 옮겨졌습니다. 성 프랜시스가 죽으면서 마지막에 남긴 말씀들 중의 하나는 “오 나의 자매 죽음 이여” 라는 말씀이었습니다.

Rev. Son Yang Won was a very precious leader who was deeply involved in loving the Lord, in loving the lepers, in loving the enemies and in loving martyrdom. After all the Rev. Son Yang Won lived the life full of poverty, suffering, sorrow and pain and died the death of martyrdom when he was 48 years old. The Rev. Son Yang Won was called as the “atomic bomb of love.” The Rev. Son Yang Won wrote a song called as “Love of Ae Yang Won.” Ae Yang Won was the name of the place where many lepers were living together. The Rev. Son Yang Won wrote both the words and music as the following.

손양원 목사님은 주님 사랑에 깊이 사로잡히고, 나병 환자들 사랑과 원수들 사랑과 순교 사랑에 사로잡힌 아주 귀중한 분이셨다고 생각합니다. 결국 손양원 목사님은 가난과 고난과 슬픔과 아픔으로 충만한 삶을 사시다가 48세때 순교의 죽음을 죽으셨습니다. 손양원 목사님은 “사랑의 원자탄” 이라고 불리우셨습니다. 손양원 목사님은 “애양원 사랑”에 대한 노래를 만들어서 부르시곤 했습니다. 애양원은 수 많은 나병 화자들이 함께 살고 있던 장소의 이름이었습니다. 손양원 목사님께서는 “애양원 사랑”에 대한 노래의 가사와 노래를 다음과 같이 만들어서 부르시곤 했습니다.

“Lord! Help me to love Ae Yang Won. Lord! Help me to carry the real love to love towards Ae Yang Won. Lord! Help me to love them more than my parents brothers sisters wife and children. Help me to love them even when I would fall down disgraceful shameful situations. “Lord! Help me to love them even though they dislike and betray me. Lord, let me love them truly and continuously even though they hate and revolt me. O Lord help me that my love would not become humanly love but become lord’ sake love. Let me help not to love them more than the Lord. O Lord, help me to love them simply according to the love of Christ. Amen”

“주여 애양원을 사랑하게 하여 주시옵소서. 주여 나로 하여금 애양원을 참으로 사랑할 수 있는 사랑을 주시옵소서. 주께서 이들을 사랑하심 같은 사랑을 주시옵소서. 오 주여, 나는 이들을 사랑하되 나의 부모와 형제와 처자보다도 더 사랑하게 하여 주시옵소서. 차라리 내 몸이 저들과 같이 추한 지경에 빠질지라도 사랑하게 하여 주시옵소서. 주여, 만약 저들이 나를 싫어하여 나를 배반할지라도 나는 여전히 저들을 참으로 사랑하여 종말까지 싫어 버리지 않게 하여 주시옵소서. 오 주여, 내가 이들을 사랑한다 하오나 인위적 사랑, 인간적 사랑이 되지 않게 하여 주시옵소서. 사람을 위하여 사랑하는 사랑이 되지 않게 하여 주시고 주를 위하여 이들을 사랑하게 하여 주시옵소서. 주보다는 더 사랑치 않게 하여 주시옵소서. 주여, 내가 또한 세상의 무슨 명예심으로 사랑하거나 말세의 무슨 상급을 위하여 사랑하는 욕망적 사랑도 되지 말게 하여 주시옵소서. 다만 그리스도의 사랑의 내용에서 되는 사랑으로서 이 불쌍한 영육들만을 위한 단순한 사랑이 되게 하여 주시옵소서. 오 주여, 나의 남은 생이 몇 해 일지는 알 수 없으나 이 몸과 맘 주께 맡긴 그대로 이 애양원을 위하여 충심으로 사랑케 하여 주시옵소서. 아멘.”

Rev. Son Yang Won repeated to say as the following. “Poverty is my dear wife, Suffering is my good teacher, Death is my real Wish.” Long time ago St. Francis repeated to say the same thing. In facts Rev. Son Yang Won respected St. Francis very much. Rev. Son Yang Won was arrested and imprisoned by the Japanese soldiers because Rev. Son opposed against Shintoism. Rev. Son Yang Won continued to carry the heaven hope and continued to sing the hymns in prison.

손양원 목사님께서는 다음과 같은 고백을 반복했습니다. “가난은 나의 애처이고, 고난은 나의 좋은 선생이고, 죽음은 나의 소망입니다.” 오래전에 성 프랜시스가 반복하던 고백이었습니다. 손양원 목사님은 성 프랜시스를 아주 많이 존경했습니다. 손양원 목사님은 일본 군인들에 의해서 체포되어 옥중 생활을 했는데 신사참배를 반대했기 때문이었습니다. 손양원 목사님은 천국 소망을 지니고 감옥 생활을 하셨고 천국 소망의 찬송들을 부르시면서 감옥 생활을 하셨습니다.

After liberation in 1950 Rev. Son Yang Won was arrested by the communist soldiers because he did not accept the communist political policies. Rev. Son Yang Won was arrested again (Sep 13,1950) and severely punished by the communist leaders for two weeks and was shot to death in Mypyung. Rev. Son Yang Won met the death of glorious martyrdom when he was 48 years old. In the early morning of next day Chung Yang Soon the wife of Rev. Son Yang Won wept with tears and said as the following. “You died as you wished. You envied so much Rev. Choo Ki Chyul. Thank you, my God, you helped Rev. Son to do the works of God and death of martyrdom. Thank you, my God, Thank you, my God.”

1950년 조선이 해방이 되었을 때 손양원 목사님은 공산주의 군인들에게 체포가 되었는데 공산주의 정책에 협력을 하지 않았기 때문이었습니다. 손양원 목사님은 1950년 9월 13일 따시 체포되어서 두 주간 동안 공산주의 지도자들에게 극심하 처벌을 받았는데 미평 과수원에서 총살을 당해서 48세에 순교의 제물이 되었습니다. 다음날 아침 정양순 사모는 손양원 목사님 시체 앞에서 울면서 다음과 같은 고백을 했습니다. “여보 당신의 소원대로 되었군요. 당신은 주기철 목사님을 그렇게도 부러워했는데요. 나의 하나님, 감사합니다. 당신은 손 목사로 하여금 하나님의 일을 하게 하셨고 순교의 죽음을 죽게 하셨습니다. 감사합니다. 나의 하나님. 감사합니다. 나의 하나님.
