Happy New Year! May God bless you real good! Whenever I visit small churches I always bring rice cake or bread for each member of the church. Today I brought rice cake and bread. It is because Today is New Year’s Day. It is so good for me to come back here again today to meet my dear friends from many different foreign countries and to worship God together with you.
행복한 새해를 맞으시기를 바라고 하나님께서 여러분들을 축복하시기를 바랍니다. 저는 작은 교회들을 방문할 때마다 떡이나 빵을 교회 교인들에게 가지고 갑니다. 오늘은 떡과 빵을 다 가지고 왔습니다. 오늘이 새해 첫날이니 때문입니다. 오늘 여기 다시 와서 여러 나라에서 오신 사랑하는 친구 여러분들을 만나고 여러분들과 함께 하나님께 예배 드리게 되어서 아주 좋습니다.
Five years ago I was here and delivered a message entitled as “What is the life all about?" Four years ago I was here and delivered a message entitled as “The life and ministry of Jesus’ mission.” Three years ago I was here and delivered a message entitled as “The Gospel of the Cross.” Two years ago I was here and delivered a message entitled as “The most important thing for the human beings.” Last year on June 5th I was here and delivered a message entitled as “the life as aliens and strangers.” Today I am here again and am going to deliver a message entitled as “Live as children of light.” It is because the missionary Rev. Kim Young Ae asked me to deliver a message about “the children of light.”
제가 5년 전에 여기 와서 “인생이 무엇인가?” 라는 제목의 말씀을 전했고, 4년 전에 여기 와서 “예수님의 선교적 삶과 사역”이라는 제목의 말씀을 전했고, 3년 전에 여기 와서 “십자가의 복음” 이라는 제목의 말씀을 전했고, 2년 전에 여기 와서 “인생에게 있어서 가장 중요한 것” 이라는 제목의 말씀을 전했고, 작년에 여기 와서 “나그네와 행인 같은 인생” 이라는 제목의 말씀을 전했는데, 오늘 여기 다시 와서 “빛의 자녀들처럼 행하라” 라는 제목의 말씀을 전하려고 합니다. 김영애 선교사님이 “빛의 자녀들”에 대한 말씀을 전해달라고 부탁을 했기 때문입니다.
The Bible describes the believers as “the children of light.” I am going to read the Scriptural passages today again. “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light, for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth.”(Eph 5:8.9). The Bible tells us that we were once darkness, but now we are light in the Lord. What does it mean? It means that we were originally darkness in Satan and sinfulness, but now we have become light in the Lord, Jesus Christ. Our life and our fortune have completely changed from darkness into light. We once belonged to Satan and darkness. Now we came to belong to the Lord, the light of the world. Jesus said that he was the light of the world. “Jesus said, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”(John 8:12). Apostle Paul also said that we are all sons of the light and do not belong to the night or to the darkness. “You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.”(1Thess 5:5).
성경은 신자들을 “빛의 자녀들” 이라고 묘사합니다. 오늘 성경 본문의 말씀을 다시 읽습니다. “너희가 전에는 어두움이더니 이제는 주 안에서 빛이라 빛의 자녀들처럼 행하라 빛의 열매는 모든 착함과 의로움과 진실함에 있느니라”(엡 5:8,9). 성경은 우리들이 전에는 어두움이었는데 지금은 주님 안에서 빛이라고 말합니다. 무슨 뜻입니까? 우리들이 본래는 사탄과 죄악 안에서 어두움이었는데 지금 우리들은 예수 그리스도 주님 안에서 빛이 되었다는 뜻입니다. 우리들의 삶과 운명이 어두움으로부터 빛으로 완전히 바꾸어졌습니다. 우리들이 전에는 사탄과 어두움에 속했었는데 지금은 세상의 빛이 되시는 주님에게 속하게 되었습니다. 예수님께서는 자기가 세상의 빛이라고 말씀하셨습니다. “예수께서 또 일러 가라사대 나는 세상의 빛이니 나를 따르는 자는 어두움에 다니지 아니하고 생명의 빛을 얻으리라”(요 8:12). 사도 바울도 우리들은 모두 빛의 자녀들이고 밤이나 어두움에 속하지 않게 되었다고 말했습니다. “너희는 다 빛의 아들이요 낮의 아들이라 우리가 밤이나 어두움에 속하지 아니하나니”(설전 5:5).
The Bible then exhorts us to live as children of light. The Bible tells us that living as children of light means doing goodness, righteousness and truth. “Live as children of light, for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth.” It is because the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth. It means that the light naturally produces all goodness, righteousness and truth. Jesus stressed the importance of doing goodness as the following. “In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”(Matt 5:16). When we stay in light we naturally and essentially do goodness, righteousness and truth.
성경은 그 다음에 빛의 자녀들처럼 행하라고 권면합니다. 성경은 빛의 자녀들처럼 행하는 것은 착함과 의로움과 진실함을 행하는 것이라고 말합니다. “빛의 자녀들처럼 행하라 빛의 열매는 모든 착함과 의로움과 진실함에 있느니라”(엡 5:8,9). 왜냐하면 빛은 착함과 의로움과 진실함으로 존재하기 때문입니다. 빛은 자연적으로 착함과 의로움과 진실함을 산출하기 때문입니다. 예수님께서는 착함의 중요성을 다음과 같이 강조하셨습니다. “이같이 너희 빛을 사람 앞에 비취게 하여 저희로 너희 착한 행실을 보고 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하라”(마 5:16). 우리가 빛 가운데 거하면 우리는 자연적으로 그리고 본질적으로 착함과 의로움과 진실함을 나타내게 됩니다.
Faith is of course very important for the believers. It is because Jesus stressed the importance of belief as the following. “After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. The time has come, he said. The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!"(Mk 1:14,15). "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life”(John 5:24). “Then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.”(John 6:35).
신자들에게 있어서 믿음이 매우 중요한 것은 사실입니다. 예수님께서 믿음의 중요성을 다음과 같이 강조하셨기 때문입니다. “요한이 잡힌 후 예수께서 갈릴리에 오셔서 하나님의 복음을 전파하여 가라사대 때가 찼고 하나님 나라가 가까왔으니 회개하고 복음을 믿으라 하시더라”(막 1:14,15). “내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 내 말을 듣고 또 나 보내신 이를 믿는 자는 영생을 얻었고 심판에 이르지 아니하나니 사망에서 생명으로 옮겼느니라”(요 5:24). “예수께서 가라사대 내가 곧 생명의 떡이니 내게 오는 자는 결코 주리지 아니할 터이요 나를 믿는 자는 영원히 목마르지 아니하리라”(요 6:35).
Doing goodness could be more important. It is because faith without love and goodness is nothing. “If I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.”(1Cor. 13:2). Jesus also stressed the importance of doing goodness as the following. “In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”(Matt 5:16). "Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers? The expert in the law replied, the one who had mercy on him. Jesus told him, Go and do likewise."(Luke10:36,37). “When Jesus heard this, he said to him, you still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."(Luke 18:22). Doing goodness is so much important. It could be more important than faith. It is because that Old and New Testament stresses the importance of doing goodness.
선을 행하는 것이 더 중요하다고 생각합니다. 사랑과 선행이 없는 믿음은 아무 것도 아니기 때문입니다. “내가 예언하는 능이 있어 모든 비밀과 모든 지식을 알고 또 산을 옮길만한 모든 믿음이 있을찌라도 사랑이 없으면 내가 아무 것도 아니요”(고전 13:2). 예수님께서는 선행의 중요성을 다음과 같이 강조하셨습니다. “네 의견에는 이 세 사람 중에 누가 강도 만난 자의 이웃이 되겠느냐 가로되 자비를 베푼 자니이다 예수께서 이르시되 가서 너도 이와 같이 하라 하시니라”(눅10:36,37). “예수께서 이 말을 들으시고 이르시되 네가 오히려 한 가지 부족한 것이 있으니 네게 있는 것을 다 팔아 가난한 자들을 나눠 주라 그리하면 하늘에서 보화가 네게 있으리라 그리고 와서 나를 좇으라 하시니”(눅18:22). 선을 행하는 것은 너무 중요합니다. 선을 행하는 것은 믿음보다 중요할 수 있습니다. 구약과 신약이 선행의 중요성을 강조하기 때문입니다.
The subject of message today is “Live as children of light.” The Scriptural passage today exhorts us to “live as children of light” and “do goodness, righteousness and truth.” It is because the existence and fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth. The Bible exhorts us that if we believe in Jesus as our savior and Lord, and if we are light in the Lord Jesus, we should practice doing goodness, righteousness and truth in our day life.
오늘 말씀의 제목이 “빛의 자녀들처럼 행하라” 입니다. 오늘 본문의 말씀은 “빛의 자녀들처럼 행하라” 라고 권면하고 “착함과 의로움과 진실함을 나타내라”고 권면합니다. 왜냐하면 빛의 존재와 열매가 착함과 의로움과 진실함에 있기 때문입니다. 성경은 우리들이 예수님을 우리들의 구주와 주님으로 믿고 우리들이 주님 예수 안에서 빛이라면 우리들은 날마다의 삶에 있어서 착함과 의로움과 진실함을 실천하여야 한다고 권면합니다.
The Acts of the Apostles repeats to point out that the Jerusalem church members who believed in Jesus and became the lights in the Lord were all engaged in doing goodness such as sharing needy things and helping the poor. “All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need.”(Acts 2:44,45). “All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need.”(Acts4:32,34,35).
사도행전은 예수님을 믿고 주님 안에서 빛이 된 예루살렘 교회의 신자들이 모두 필요한 것들을 나누고 가난한 사람들을 돕는 선행에 종사한 것을 계속해서 지적합니다. “믿는 사람이 다 함께 있어 모든 물건을 서로 통용하고 또 재산과 소유를 팔아 각 사람의 필요를 따라 나눠 주고”(행 2:44,45). “믿는 무리가 한 마음과 한 뜻이 되어 모든 물건을 서로 통용하고 제 재물을 조금이라도 제 것이라 하는 이가 하나도 없더라그 중에 핍절한 사람이 없으니 이는 밭과 집 있는 자는 팔아 그 판 것의 값을 가져다가 사도들의 발 앞에 두매 저희가 각 사람의 필요를 따라 나눠줌이러라”(행 4:32,34,35)
When the number of disciples was increasing, the twelve apostles proposed to choose seven men full of the Spirit and wisdom to carry out the ministry of relief and distribution of food. The proposal was gladly accepted. “In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them. and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word. This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.”(Acts 6:1-6). The life and ministry of doing goodness such as sharing needy things and helping the poor were not only limited to the believers in Jerusalem but extended to all believers of other places in the Acts of the Apostles.
제자들의 수가 많아졌을 때 열두 사도가 성령과 지혜가 충만한 사람 일곱을 택하여 구제와 음식 분배의 사역을 하게 하자고 제안했을 때 그 제안이 기쁘게 받아드려 졌습니다. “그 때에 제자가 더 많아졌는데 헬라파 유대인들이 자기의 과부들이 그 매일 구제에 빠지므로 히브리파 사람을 원망한대 열 두 사도가 모든 제자를 불러 이르되 우리가 하나님의 말씀을 제쳐 놓고 공궤를 일삼는 것이 마땅치 아니하니 형제들아 너희 가운데서 성령과 지혜가 충만하여 칭찬 듣는 사람 일곱을 택하라 우리가 이 일을 저희에게 맡기고 우리는 기도하는 것과 말씀 전하는 것을 전무하리라 하니 온 무리가 이 말을 기뻐하여 믿음과 성령이 충만한 사람 스데반과 또 빌립과 브로고로와 니가노르와 디몬과 바메나와 유대교에 입교한 안디옥 사람 니골라를 택하여 사도들 앞에 세우니 사도들이 기도하고 그들에게 안수하니라”(행 6:1-6). 필요한 것들을 나누고 가난한 사람들을 돕는 선행의 삶과 사역은 예루살렘에 살던 사람들에게만 제한된 것은 아니었고 사도행전에 나타난 다른 지역의 신자들에게도 확장되었습니다.
There was a lady believer by the name of Tabitha or Dorcas in Joppa. She was always doing good and helping the poor and because of her ministry of relief many people in Joppa came to believe in the Lord. I am going to read the story of Tabitha or Dorcas. “In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which, when translated, is Dorcas), who was always doing good and helping the poor. About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room. Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, Please come at once! Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them. Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, Tabitha, get up. She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up. He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called the believers and the widows and presented her to them alive.This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord.(Acts 9:36-42). Doing goodness is so much important. God is so much pleased to see our doing goodness. Many peoples are also so much impressed and come to believe in Jesus.
욥바에 다비다 또는 도르가 라고 이름하는 여성 신자가 있었습니다. 도르가는 선행과 구제하는 일이 심히 많았는데 그녀의 구제의 사역 때문에 욥바에 살던 많은 사람들이 주님을 믿게 되었다고 했습니다. 다비다 또는 도르가의 이야기를 그대로 읽으려고 합니다. “욥바에 다비다라 하는 여제자가 있으니 그 이름을 번역하면 도르가라 선행과 구제하는 일이 심히 많더니 그 때에 병들어 죽으매 시체를 씻어 다락에 뉘우니라 룻다가 욥바에 가까운지라 제자들이 베드로가 거기 있음을 듣고 두 사람을 보내어 지체 말고 오라고 간청하니 베드로가 일어나 저희와 함께 가서 이르매 저희가 데리고 다락에 올라가니 모든 과부가 베드로의 곁에 서서 울며 도르가가 저희와 함께 있을 때에 지은 속옷과 겉옷을 다 내어 보이거늘 베드로가 사람을 다 내어 보내고 무릎을 꿇고 기도하고 돌이켜 시체를 향하여 가로되 다비다야 일어나라 하니 그가 눈을 떠 베드로를 보고 일어나 앉는지라 베드로가 손을 내밀어 일으키고 성도들과 과부들을 불러 들여 그의 산 것을 보이니 온 욥바 사람이 알고 많이 주를 믿더라”(행 9:36-42). 하나님께서는 우리들의 선행을 보시고 많이 기뻐하십니다. 많은 사람들도 많은 감동을 받고 예수님을 믿게 됩니다.
There was a new believer by the name of Cornelius in Caesarea. He was a gentile Roman centurion. But he was devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly. God was so much pleased to look at Cornelius’doing goodness and praying regularly. God even sent his angel to Cornelius and delivered a message of blessing. Cornelius’ servants and other peoples were also impressed by Cornelius’ doing goodness and praying regularly. The important lesson about Cornelius is that Cornelius’ doing goodness and regular praying became the basis of God’s blessing and evangelization in Caesarea. It was really amazing that God was so much pleased to use a gentile Roman centurion who was devout and God-fearing and who gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly as a faithful servant to carry out the mission of evangelism in Caesarea.
가이사랴에 고넬료라 이름하는 초 신자가 있었습니다. 그는 이방 로마인 백부장이었습니다. 그러나 그는 경건하여 하나님을 경외했습니다. 그는 백성을 많이 구제하고 하나님께 항상 기도했습니다. 하나님께서는 고넬료의 선행과 기도를 보시고 크게 기뻐하셨습니다. 하나님께서는 천사를 그에게 보내고 축복의 메시지를 전달하셨습니다. 고넬료의 종들과 다른 사람들도 고넬료의 선행과 기도에 감동을 받았습니다. 고넬료에 대한 중요한 교훈을 고넬료의 선행과 기도가 가이사랴에 임한 하나님의 축복과 복음화의 기초가 되었다는 것입니다. 하나님께서 경건하고 하나님을 경외하는 그리고 도움이 필요한 사람들에게 구제의 손길을 펴고 항상 기도하는 이방인 로마사람 백부장을 가이사랴 복음화의 사역을 이룩하는 충성스러운 종으로 사용하시기를 기뻐하셨다는 것은 참으로 놀라운 일이었다고 하겠습니다.
I do not have enough time to mention about Barnabas in Antioch, Lydia in Philippi and Timothy the Apostle Paul’s “true son in faith.” They were all doing all kinds of goodness to many peoples. They were all used as beloved and useful instruments of God. The Rev. Son Yang Won and the Rev. Han Kyung Chick were also doing all kinds of goodness to many kinds of peoples. They were all used as beloved and useful instruments of God.
저는 안디옥의 바나바와 빌립보의 루디아와 사도 바울의 “참된 믿음의 아들” 디모데에 대해서 언급할 시간이 없습니다. 저들은 많은 사람들에게 모든 종류의 선행을 베풀었습니다. 저들은 모두 하나님의 사랑 받는 그리고 필요한 하나님의 일꾼들로 사용되었습니다. 손양원 목사님과 한경직 목사님도 많은 사람들에게 모든 종류의 선행을 베풀었습니다. 저들도 모두 하나님의 사랑 받는 그리고 필요한 하나님의 일꾼들로 사용되었습니다.
I am going to stress again the important teaching today. Even though we are poor and lonely when we do various kinds of goodness, righteousness and truth to many kinds of peoples God will be so much pleased to use us as his instruments for accomplishing his ministry of mission. God will be also so much pleased to bless us. Jesus told us a story of blessing to a beggar named Lazarus. Lazarus was a poor beggar and good hearted. The Bible scholars Interpret that Lazarus was a poor beggar and a good hearted person doing various kinds of goodness’s to many peoples. Finally Lazarus was blessed by God. When he died he was carried to Abraham's side. "The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side.”(Luke 16:22).
저는 오늘의 중요한 교훈을 다시 강조하려고 합니다. 우리들이 비록 가난하고 외로울지라도 우리들이 많은 종류의 사람들에게 여러 종류의 착함과 의로움과 진실함을 베풀 때 하나님께서는 우리들을 선교 사역을 이루시는 당신의 도구들로 사용하시기를 너무 기뻐하실 것입니다. 하나님께서는 또한 우리들을 축복하시기를 기뻐하실 것입니다. 예수님께서는 거지 나사로를 축복하신 이야기를 하셨습니다. 나사로는 가난한 거지였고 마음이 착한 사람이었습니다. 성경학자들은 나사로가 가난한 거지였고 마음이 착한 사람이었고 착한 일을 많이 했다고 해석합니다. 결국 나사로는 하나님의 축복을 받았습니다. 그가 죽었을 때 아브라함의 품에 안기게 되었습니다. “이에 그 거지가 죽어 천사들에게 받들려 아브라함의 품에 들어가고”(눅 16:22).
When I was a small boy I was living in North Korea. When I was 11 years old I left North Korea and came to South. I left my beloved mother and father and came to South Korea. The only reason of my leaving North Korea was keeping Sunday holy, worshipping God faithfully and becoming a servant of God after my father. Since I was an 11 years old boy I became an orphan and have lived lonely and poor life. But I came to be grateful and happy. I began to be sympathetic towards other lonely and poor children. Later I began to help poor children in Korea, China, Africa, North Korea, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and other places. I have helped about 150 poor and lonely children in Yan bian area in China during the past 20 years. The children in Yan bian area have been very grateful and their lives have changed so much.
저는 어린 소년이었을 때 북한에서 살았습니다. 제가 11살 떼 북한을 떠나서 남한으로 왔습니다. 저는 사랑하는 어머니와 아버지를 떠나 남한으로 왔습니다. 제가 북한을 떠난 유일한 이유는 주일을 거룩하게 지키고 하나님께 충실하게 예배 드리고 아버지의 뒤를 이어 하나님의 종이 되는데 있었습니다. 저는 11살 때부터 고아가 되었고 외롭고 가난한 삶을 살게 되었습니다. 그러나 저는 감사하게 되었고 행복하게 되었습니다. 저는 외롭고 가난한 어린이들에게 동정을 품게 되었습니다. 후에는 가난한 어린이들을 돕게 되었는데 한국과 중국과 아프리카와 북한과 방글라데시와 아프가니스탄과 다른 곳에 사는 가난한 어린이들을 돕게 되었습니다. 저는 중국 연변 지역에 있는 가난하고 외로운 어린이들 150여명을 지난 20여 년 동안 돕고 있습니다. 연변 지역의 어린이들은 너무 고마워하는데 저들의 삶이 아주 많이 변화되었습니다.
God was so much pleased to have blessed my life so much. It is very difficult for me to find any other person who was more blessed than me. God has blessed my life so much that I have spent my whole life for the pastoral ministry, for the teaching ministry, for the mission ministry, for the relief ministry, and for other kinds of ministries including visiting small churches. I heard that you Ammi community members are engaged in “piggy movement” of collecting money and sending money to the poor children in other countries. I believe that God will be so much pleased to look at your “piggy movement.” God will be so much pleased to use you as precious instruments of God. May God bless the missionary Rev. Kim Young Ae and all of you Ammi community members real good! Thank you very much. Happy New Year!
하나님께서는 저의 삶을 너무 많이 기뻐하시며 크게 축복해주셨습니다. 저는 저보다 더 많이 축복받은 사람을 발견하는 것이 매우 어렵습니다. 하나님께서는 저의 삶을 너무 많이 축복해주셨는데 저는 한 평생을 목회 사역과 교수 사역과 선교 사역과 구제 사역과 다른 사역들에 종사하게 되었는데 작은 교회들을 방문하는 사역에도 종사하고 있습니다. 저는 암미 선교회에 속한 여러분들이 “돼지 저금운동”에 참여하면서 돈을 모아서 다른 나라에 사는 가난한 어린이들에게 보내고 있다는 이야기를 들었습니다. 하나님께서 너무 기뻐하시면서 여러분들을 귀중한 도구들로 사용하실 것입니다, 하나님께서 김영애 선교사님과 암미 선교회에 속한 여러분들을 모두를 크게 축복하시기 기원합니다. 대단히 감사합니다. 행복한 새해를 맞으시기 바랍니다.
