"일본프로테스탄트 선교 150주년 기념대회 참석 소감" (일본요코하마에서 7월7-9일)
우선 일본교회 선교 150주년을 맞아 일본복음동맹, 일본 NCC, 일본 은사파가 공동으로 기념대회를 가지게 된 것을 진심으로 축하하며 앞으로 일본교회가 협력과 전도와 선교에 매진하게 되기를 바란다. 이번 대회를 준비하고 진행하느라 많은 수고를 하신 지도자 및 실무자 여러분들에게 진심으로 감사를 드린다.
아쉬운 점 몇 가지를 지적한다. 일본교회를 사랑하는 한 친구의 애정 어린 충고로 받아드려 지기를 바란다.
첫째, 세 단체간의 협력이 제대로 잘 이루어지지 못한 것 같다. 물론 처음 있는 일이라 완전을 기대할 수는 없다. 대회의 목표와 성격, 대회의 순서와 진행, 강사 초청 등이 잘 이루어지지 못한 것 같다.
둘째, 대회의 참여도가 만족스럽지 못했다. ‘개회 축제’와 ‘축하 행사’와 ‘폐회 예배’에 각각 3,4천여 명이 참석했지만 3,4천여 명의 참석자들 중에 목회자들은 25%에 불과했다. 내가 그동안 가깝게 지냈던 일본복음동맹의 중요한 지도자들도 많이 참석하지 않았다. 입장권을 사는 사람들은 누구나 참석할 수 있게 한 것은 기념 대회가 ‘상업적으로 흐른 경향이 있었다.’는 비판을 받을 수도 있게 되었다.
셋째, 대회의 진행과 분위기가 문화적인 분위기로, 음악 공연장과 같은 분위기로 흐른 느낌을 가지게 되었다. 제3회 일본전도대회(1991년 시오바라), 제4회 일본전도대회(2001년 오키나와) 에서 볼 수 있었던 참회와 헌신으로 충만했던 순수한 영성을 느끼지 못했다.
넷째, 한국교회에 대한 이해의 부족으로 한국교회 지도자들의 순서 참여 여부에 대한 문제가 발생하기도 했다. 본인의 중재와 설득으로 순서 참여가 이루어지기는 했으나 아주 만족스러운 것은 아니었다. 하용조 목사님의 개회설교가 일본교회의 부흥을 갈망하고 촉구하는 복음적인 메시지였음에는 틀림이 없었지만 하용조 목사님이 3일 동안 매일 강단에 등장하게 하므로 한국교회의 현주소를 제대로 나타내 보여주지 못했다고 생각한다.
다섯째, 이번 150주년 기념대회의 주제와 목표가 분명하지 않았다. ‘그리스도안에서 하나’와 ‘주님의 증인되어’라는 주제를 정했고, verify(확인), evangelize(전도), inherit(전승)이란 세 단어가 대회장에 크게 쓰여져 있기는 했지만 기념대회의 순서나 메시지들이 그 주제와 목표에 따라서 진행되지는 않았다. 특히 대부분의 시간을 차지한 각종 음악 순서들은 어떤 주제나 목표에 따라서 진행되지 않았다. 물론 사랑의 실천을 강조한 미네노 목사님의 폐회 설교를 대회의 주제에 맞는 귀한 설교였다.
여섯째, 본인은 이번 기념대회가 다음과 같은 주제들을 가지고 진행되었다면 얼마나 좋았을까 라는 생각을 해 보았다. 즉 ‘감사’와 ‘참회’와 ‘헌신’이라는 세 가지 주제를 가지고 다음과 같이 진행되었다면 좋았을 것이다.
첫째, ‘감사와 찬양’이라는 주제를 가지고 150년 동안의 역사를 조명하고 거기에 따른 메시지를 전하고 찬양으로 막을 내린다.(1시간 30분)
둘째, ‘회개와 참회’라는 주제를 가지고 150년 동안의 부끄러운 역사를 조명하고 거기에 따른 메시지를 전하고 찬양으로 막을 내린다.(1시간 30분)
셋째, ‘비전과 간구’라는 주제를 가지고 현실과 미래를 조명하고 거기에 따른 메시지를 전하고 찬양으로 막을 내린다. (1시간 30분)
넷째, ‘사랑과 선교’라는 주제를 가지고 현실과 미래를 조명하고 거기에 따른 메시지를 전하고 찬양으로 막을 내린다.(1시간 30분)
다섯째, 선언문을 세 단체 대표들이 나와서 낭독하고 참석자들이 아멘으로 화답하며 채택하고 거기에 따른 메시지를 전하고 찬양으로 막을 내린다(1시간)
여섯째, ‘협력과 평화’라는 주제를 가지고 아시아의 현실과 미래를 조명하고 거기에 따른 메시지(빌리 그래함 목사의 딸 안 그래함 로츠 여사와 한국에서 옥한흠 목사님과 조용기 목사님 두 분 중의 한 분이)를 전하고 아시아교회대표들이 축하메시지들을 전하고 아시아 교회 대표들이 단상에 올라와서 손에 손을 잡고 ‘평화의 기도’를 노래하므로 막을 내린다.(2시간 30분)
일곱째, ‘기쁨과 환희’라는 주제를 가지고 만찬을 마련하여 음식을 나누고 교제하며 ‘기쁨과 환희’를 주제로 한 음악들을 연주하며 막을 내린다.(2시간)
필요 없는 말을 너무 많이 한 것 같다. 실례가 되는 말들을 했다면 양해와 용서를 구한다. 1980년도 초부터 일본교회와의 교류와 협력을 시작하고 증진하는 일에 심부름 역할을 많이 한 사람이기 때문에 말이 너무 많아진 것 같다. 고지 혼다 목사님이 일본교회 지도자들 250여 명을 서울 충현교회당에서 열린 제1회 아시아선교대회에 데리고 와서 무릎을 꿇고 7가지 죄를 고백하며 사죄를 구한 갑동적인 일을 생생하게 기억한다. 본인이 1991년 6월 일본 시오바라에 가서 거기 모인 1,200여명 일본교회 지도자들 (고지 혼다, 하토리 목사 등 포함)앞에서 사죄의 메시지를 전했을 때 많은 사람들이 눈물을 흘리며 따뜻하게 반응했던 감동적인 일을 생생하게 기억한다.
우리 한국과 일본교회의 목사들은 아직까지 피차 거리감을 느낀다. 문화적 및 종교적 우월감을 피차 지니기도 한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 우리들은 서로를 따뜻하게 이해하고 겸손하게 품고 서로 존경하고 협력하면서 십자가의 복음과 사랑을 전하는 일에 최선을 다 하여야 할 것이다. 그것이 바로 우리 주님께서 원하시는 일이고 기뻐하는 일이라고 생각하기 때문이다.
일본기독교의 대표적인 3단체가 협력하여 역사적인 150주년기념대회를 개최한 데 대해서 다시 한 번 일본교회에 진심으로 축하와 감사를 드린다. 선교 150주년을 맞는 일본교회를 하나님께서 크게 축복하시고 귀하게 사용하시기를 기원한다.

“The task and role of the Korean missionaries in Asia” (일본기독교선교150주년기념대회, 09.7.7-9)

We praise God and give thanks to Him for the abundant grace and blessings bestowed upon the Korean church that she has been able to send missionaries to the various Asian countries to carry out the great task of witnessing Jesus Christ. However, we have to confess that some of the Korean missionaries have failed to deeply understand and humbly embrace Asian brothers and sisters of various cultural and racial backgrounds and have sometimes manifested domineering attitudes towards them. We sincerely regret that and apologize for it.
Now I am going to present some of my thought about the task and role of the Korean missionaries in Asia. First of all, the missionaries should have the hearts of understanding, compassion and mercy towards the various people whom they serve. God had such heart even towards the wicked people of Nineveh. When Jesus saw a large crowd of sick people, he was also compassionate towards them. Francis of Assisi had the same heart towards all kinds of people, even towards the people of Muslims and atheists. The Rev. Sohn Yang Won also had the similar heart towards many people, even towards the wicked man who had shot two of his sons. It is really beyond our ability to possess such heart of compassion and mercy towards the various people we are going to serve. In order to have such hearts of compassion and mercy we will have to continuously look upon Jesus Christ on the cross and also look upon the saintly men of God who have manifested the mind of Jesus Christ through their sacrificial lives and deaths.
I would like to point out the three ‘secrets’ how to possess such heart of compassion and mercy. It has come from my life long meditation and experiences. I have found out that the three characteristics of the Gospel oriented life are weakness, goodness, and circumference.
The first characteristic of the Gospel oriented life is weakness. Jesus has become weak. Paul has become weak. Paul was even boasting, delighting and rejoicing in his weaknesses. “Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses. I delight in weaknesses. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”(2Cor.12:9,10). Francis of Assisi has become weak. The Rev. Sohn Yang Won has become weak. Weaknesses was the secret for them to possess the hearts of understanding, compassion and mercy towards the various people. One of the critical problems of the Korean church is that she has become too rich and too strong.
The second characteristic of the Gospel oriented life is goodness. By goodness I mean doing and living for the benefits of others. Jesus has become good and lived for the benefits of others. Teaching and preaching have come later. Paul has become good and lived for the benefits of others. Teaching and preaching have come later. Francis of Assisi has become good and lived for the benefits of others. Teaching and preaching have come later. Goodness was another secret for them to possess the hearts of understanding, compassion and mercy towards the various people. One of the critical problems of the Korean church is that she has become too much involved in preaching, teaching and programming rather than doing and living for the benefits of others.
The third characteristic of the Gospel oriented life is circumference. By circumference I mean going beyond self-centerdness and nationalism and going to the end of the earth. Jesus has come from the heavenly home and gone to the end of the earth, even to the hell. Israel was not his main concern. The end of the earth was his ultimate concern. Paul has left Israel and gone to the end of the earth, the heart of the anti-Christian forces. Francis of Assisi has left his homeland and gone to the lands of the Muslims and of the atheists. Circumference and the end directedness was another secret for them to possess the hearts of understanding, compassion and mercy towards the various people. One of the critical problems of the Korean church is that she has become too much involved in individualism, regionalism and nationalism. I think that the above three critical problems are not only the problems of the Korean church but also the problems of many other Asian churches. We therefore have to be united to tackle with the chronic diseases in order to possess the hearts of compassion and mercy and to carry out the great task of mission to witness Jesus Christ.
I would like to add one more thing about the role of the missionaries. I have come to learn one important lesson about mission. Preaching may not be the necessary part of mission work. Teaching theology, practicing miracle healing, or building church may be neither. Mission rather is playing together. It could be playing football, playing ping-pong, or bowling. It could be going together to the beaches and mountains. Mission is eating together or living together. Playing together and living together can be allowed and even welcome to most of the places where preaching is forbidden. Playing or living together could be the most effective means of mission today. I would like to conclude my words by saying that we should do our best to be united, understand, embrace, love each other, and respect each other. We do our best to carry out the great commission of witnessing Jesus Christ together. May God be merciful to all of us!
