Some Comments on the Presentation of Prof. Dr. P. Beyerhaus

                                                           Rev. Dr. Jong-Wha Park

1. Regarding the War on Iraq the presenter is convincingly denouncing the legitimacy of the War on the basis of the so-called just war.  He rightly sees that practices of the present Iraqi War comply in no way with any of 7 yard sticks of the just war which have been propagated as moral and political grounds of war initiation by the Coalition of the Willing. Its attack on Iraq is from the start contrary to the basic defensive character of a just war.

2. Iraq was brandmarked as an axis of evil also because of its possible production and ownership of weapons of mass destruction(WMD), which is, however, yet to be proved.  But the irony is the fact that the Coalition bombed Iraq with uncomparably higher functional WMDs in order to get rid of enemies.  A big question arises: Is the Coalition enough good to use the mass destruction weapons to destroy its own evel forces?  Isn't it a kind of double morality in its own interest and at the cost of others?

3. In the post-war situation we may have to confront serious conflicts such as

3.1 an increasing enmity between Christian-Zionist Solidarity and Islam World. The threatening words by the Us-American government officials targeting further at Iran and Syria may only deepen the existing religious conflicts.  It will be very sad, and it should be hindered in advance, if North Korea could be also a third target in a manouver to cover up such a conflict structure.
3.2 a serious setback of UN as an international organization to intermediate world peace programs.  The US-American and British march into Iraq without a legitimate consent of UN may mean an attempt to replace it with another form of international institution propagating a Pax Americana.  This may lead to  tragic ethnic hegemony conflicts between anglo-saxons and others. In this respect it is symptomatic that the war-participating Coalition of the Willing is composed of anglo-saxon British-American nations, and the nations of the Unwilling and of the Reluctant are ethnically different.

4. The presenter is right to see in the New World Order a picture of the US-American unilateralism  on the basis of a Christian-materialistic syncretism.  To me and probably to us all the USA is no loner a mere super-power, but more an American Empire, whose hegemonic concept is called to be a new world order. It is true in this situation that the Pax Americana represents a global governance without a global government.

It was Pax Romana to interpret and legitimize what just should and could mean in the just war principle.  It is in the same way true now that the Pax Americana justifies the just war, whereas the rest of nations and peoples are not willing to accept it. What can be a commonly shared new world order?

5. In theological and missionary perspectives we may newly set in motion a movement for a Peace of Christi for the real peace of the world quite different from the peace propagated by the world powers (Joh. 14,27).  A new peace: peace without war, peace with justice of God, a reconciling peace for the salvation of all humanity, etc.
