“Beyond the Walls of Nationalism and Culture”(Rev. 7:9,10)

The nature of Christianity is paradoxical: it is human as well as divine, earthly as well as heavenly, here and now as well as there and future. As a human being we all belong to a certain country (nation) and culture. As Christians, however, we go beyond and transcend them. While we do not deny our country and culture, we principally and ultimately all belong to the kingdom of God and the heavenly ‘culture.’ Jesus told his disciples that it should not be their concern to restore Israel, their country. Rather they were told to be concerned about the restoration of the kingdom of God.
One of the basic problems of human history is exclusive attachment to one’s own nation and culture. One of the most serious problems today is also that of nationalism and religio-cultural ideologies. It has already manifested in the wars between Israel and Palestine, between China and Japan, and between the North and South Koreas. It has also manifested in the conflicts (even terrorisms) between and Western ethno-centrism (‘superiorism’) and Eastern cultural pride.
Jesus came to overthrow the walls of regionalism and nationalism. He willingly went to the despised region of Samaria and even to the deserted district of Tyre and Sidon to meet the ‘dogs’ of heathen women and save them. Later he forced Peter to go to the city of Caesarea to save a heathen Roman soldier there. Apostle Paul later pointed out that Jesus came to break down and abolish the dividing walls of hostility between different kinds of peoples and nations and declared, “there is nether Jew nor Greek, [neither Chinese nor Korean,] for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
Personally speaking I was hostile both to the Japanese and North Korean people because of their enforcement of Shinto shrine worship and persecution of Christian faith. Since the time about 1988, however, I have gradually changed to become one of the most favorable persons towards the Japanese and North Korean people. I have, therefore, often been suspected and even criticized. Since the Shanghai meeting last year my heart is gradually moving favorably towards the Chinese people in the main land. I believe it is a biblically oriented moving.
Jesus showed to his most beloved disciple John the heaven vision where a great multitude of people gathered standing before the heavenly throne. There was neither nationalism nor culture. This is the vision towards which we march and work together. For the glory of God and for the sake of Jesus alone let us march together hand in hand!

기독교의 특성은 역설적입니다. 그것은 인간적이면서도 신적이고, 세상적이면서도 천상적이고, 여기 지금이면서도 저기 미래입니다. 우리는 인간으로써 모두 어느 나라와 문화에 속해 있습니다. 그러나 우리는 그리스도인으로써 그것을 넘어서고 초월합니다. 우리는 우리의 나라와 문화를 부정하지 않지만, 우리는 원칙적으로 그리고 궁극적으로 모두 하나님의 나라와 하늘 ‘문화’에 속해 있습니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 그들의 조국인 이스라엘 나라의 회복에 관심을 두지 말라고 말씀했습니다. 오히려 그들은 하나님 나라 회복에 관심을 두어야 한다고 말씀했습니다.
인간 역사의 근본적인 문제들의 하나는 자기의 나라와 문화에 지나치게 집착하는 것입니다. 오늘의 세계의 가장 심각한 문제들 중의 하나도 민족주의와 종교문화적 이데오로기의 문제입니다. 그것은 이미 이스라엘과 팔레스틴간의 전쟁과 중국과 일본간 그리고 북한과 남한간의 전쟁으로 나타났습니다. 그것은 또한 서양의 민족 우월주의와 동양의 문화적 자만간의 갈등으로 (심지어는 테러리즘으로) 나타났습니다.
예수님은 지역주의와 민족주의의 장벽들을 무너뜨리기 위해서 오셨습니다. 주님은 일부러 멸시를 당하던 지역인 사마리아로 가셨고 심지어는 버림받았던 지역인 두로와 시돈까지 가셨습니다. 개 취급을 받던 이방의 여인들을 만나고 그들을 구원하시기 위해서 였습니다. 주님은 후에 베드로로 하여금 억지로 가이사랴에 가게 하셨는데 그곳에 있던 이방인 로마 군인을 구원하시기 위해서 였습니다. 사도 바울은 후에 예수님께서 민족과 나라들을 갈라놓았던 증오의 장벽들을 무너뜨리고 없애버리기 위해서 오셨다고 지적하며 다음과 같이 선언했습니다. “너희는 유대인이나 헬라인이나 [중국 사람이나 한국 사람이나] 다 그리스도 예수 안에서 하나이니라.”
저는 개인적으로 일본 사람들과 북한 사람들에 대해서 적대적이었습니다. 신사참배를 강요했고 기독교 신앙을 박해했기 때문입니다. 그러나 1988년경부터 저는 점점 일본 사람들과 북한 사람들을 가장 좋아하는 사람들 중의 한 사람으로 바뀌어졌습니다. 그래서 저는 의심을 받기도 했고 비판을 받기도 했습니다. 작년 상해 모임이후 저의 마음은 중국 사람들(본토)에 대해 호의적으로 바꾸어져 가고 있습니다. 저는 이와 같은 움직임이 성서적 성향의 움직임이라고 믿습니다.
예수님은 가장 사랑하시던 제자인 요한에게 하늘의 비전을 보여주셨는데 거기에는 큰 무리가 보좌 앞에 서 있었습니다. 그런데 거기에는 민족주의도 문화도 없었습니다. 이것이 우리가 함께 향해서 전진하고 함께 일하는 비전입니다. 오직 하나님의 영광과 오직 예수님을 위하여 손에 손을 잡고 함께 전진하십시다!
